Abstract
Purpose: In present society, an increase of adolescent problems are due to heavy school work loads and the courses from graduation. Third year high school students especially have the pressure of college entrance examinations or job options. Due to these pressures, students may develop depression and anxiety. We surveyed high school students to find out several characteristics; the frequency of depression and anxiety traits, differences about several issues and factors which are correlated with depression and anxiety traits.
Materials and Methods: This survey was conducted during the month of April 1997, which included 884 third year high school students who resided within Inchon city. To collect the data for depression and anxiety trait, BDI(Beck¢¥s depression inventory) and SAS(Self-rating anxiety scale) were used and Family APGAR score was used for family function assessment. These data were analysed using t-test and Duncan¢¥s multiple ranges test.
Results: Frequency of total students¢¥ depression trait was 30.5%. Commercial high school students showed a more significant depression trait than high school students. Commercial high school girl students showed the highest depression trait with 37.9% and high school boy students showed the lowest depression trait with 20.3%. Overall girls showed a higher depression trait than boys. Frequency of total students¢¥ anxiety trait was 13.6%. Girls showed the highest anxiety trait with 20.9% and boys showed the lowest trait with 8.9%. Those traits were significantly correlated with family APGAR score, rank in school, school satisfaction and intersexual problem. Satisfaction at school record and the courses from graduation were only related with depression trait. Medical history of severe illness or trauma history were only related with anxiety trait.
Conclusion: Depression trait of third year high school students was high for the commercial high school students, whereas anxiety trait was high for the high school students, even though it was not statistically significant. These results seem to reflect current Korean society that respects well educated person but ignores blue color workers. At the same time, high school students develop anxiety due to college entrance examinations and which reflects their internal stress. Girls had a higher depression and anxiety traits than boys. This result may be influenced by women¢¥s low social position in Korea and is partially due to higher depression prevalence of teenage girls. Generally, school life was a main factor in their traits. And family APGAR score was the only one factor among family related factors. In particular, frequency of depression was higher than expected. Therefore, primary care physicians should have deep concern and approach for those students comprehensively.
